By , About.com Guide

What the U.S. Senate Is:

The U.S. Senate consists of 100 elected Senators, two from each state. Each Senator is elected for a six-year term and no term limits are placed on a Senator's seat.

What the U.S. Senate Does:

In addition to the functions of the U.S. Congress , the Senate has a few functions only it can perform.

These include:

  • Confirm or disapprove any treaties the President drafts.
  • Confirm or disapprove the Presidential appointments, such as the Cabinet, officers, Supreme Court justices, and ambassadors.
  • Holds a trial for a Government official who commits a crime against the country.

How the U.S. Senate Affects You:

In addition to how the U.S. Senate affects the economy, a good Senator can help you personally. To find out who your Senator is, go to the Senators of the 110th Congress. To find out how your Senator has been affecting you, go to their link on that page.
