"Bear Market"

By Kimberly Amadeo, About.com

Definition: A bear market is when the stock market, usually the Dow Jones Industrial Average, declines pretty substantially over time. A bear market usually has to make lower lows, and lower highs.

There are lots of different definitions, but the most thorough is at About.com "Understanding Bear Markets"

Examples: Bear markets are what created the old saying "It's not how much you make, it's how much you keep".
