Consumer Spending Boosts Q4 Growth

The BEA 's final estimate of GDP for the fourth quarter (October-December) 2010 came in at 3.1%, closer to the advance estimate of  3.2%. This is  better than Q3's 2.6% economic growth rate, and -- most important -- higher than the 3% rate needed to generate a lot of jobs (see analysis at Calculated Risk). Growth was driven by personal consumer expenditures.

In addition to jolly holiday sales, the economy was helped by an uptick in exports. The growth would have been stronger, except for the drag in state and local government spending, and businesses not restocking inventory. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, decreased.
